Sri Lanka is dotted with a large number of these natural beauties and today we feature a select one of them from Bulathkohupitiya area of the island, some of which may not be very familiar to you as they are small, wayside or forest falls.
Nalagana Ella Falls in Dedugala Springing from the Ritigaha Oya, a tributary of the Kelani River, The Falls comprises a number of chutes, each measuring about 40m in height. It is situated at Dedugala, 9km away from Bulathkohupitiya.
Flowing parallel to the Bulathkohupitiya-Dedugala road though not visible most of the time due to the trees and shrubs, it comes down like a veil over a broad granite rock bed into a deep pool situated on a steep slope about 08 km from Bulathkohupitiya.
Pretty dangerous as the water level of the fall can be increased rapidly without any prior notice. Diversity rich riverine vegetation can be observed. But the path is not much clear towards the falls. You have to take the road at a bend of the main road towards a mini hydro plant. Then take the foot path and climb down to the river. You will see the falls.
The source of the 30m Rikilla Ella Fall is the stream flowing from the northern side of the Hunusahaldeniya Mountain Range (600m). It is 5 Km away from the Dedugala.
Located at dedugala 13 Km away from Bulathkohupitiya and the height of the Rukmal Ella fall is 10m, we can see it easily from the main road.
Ritigala Oya(water stream) flows to the Kelani River.
