Overview

Sri Lanka is a hiker’s paradise. This country is ideal for backpackers. Waterfalls, summits surrounded by magnificent views, greenery is all over this little island.

Great Western is the 6th highest mountain in Sri Lanka. This mountain is located in Nuwara Eliya District with other very scenic mountains. The easiest way to go to Great Western is via Colombo – Badulla night mail train that leaves from Fort Railway station at 7 pm daily.  It is fairly difficult to book train tickets for Fridays for 1st class and 2nd class cabins, if you want to book train tickets for a Friday you have to do it well in advance. We started our journey in a 3rd class cabin. The cabin was really crowded but the rush eased out approximately after two hours of leaving Colombo Fort Railway Station.

The gang was a 12 people army squad who were ready for anything. We got down from the train at about 5 in the morning from Great Western Rail Way Station which is undoubtedly one of the most scenic railway stations in Sri Lanka. When we were abut to get down from the train we phoned our local guide, Mr. Thanga Mohan who turned up to guide us to the peak of Great Western Mountain.

We started our hike at about 6 am in the morning on Saturday. The mountain looked like a sweet little mountain but was challenging to hike. Firstly it was a mini railway hike towards Redella railway station before we took a left turn to start hiking. It was mostly ascending with less trekking. We continuously climbed till 11.30 am to reach the top of the mountain. We had to use ropes in some places because the it was slippery and it was steep in some areas. The top of the mountain had breathtaking views and amazing sceneries. The weather was but chilly, sunny and windy. We had our lunch on top of the mountain, spent about one hour enjoying the sceneries and capturing photographs.

This is the only train station in Sri Lanka where you can see two trains at the same spot, stopped parallel to each other, at the same time. This is because one train has to wait till the other train arrives at the Great Western Railway Station.

At around 1 pm we started to descend. It took us about 3 hours to descend the mountain. Rain started to pour towards the end of the hike but it was like some blessings of nature. Walking along the railway track to get to Great Western station in the pouring rain was a real good experience. The return train was at 7.00 pm from Great Western Rail Station to Colombo. We had enough time to take a dip in natural pool and to enjoy a great dinner at our guide’s home. We got in to the train at 7.00 pm and reached Colombo Fort Railway Station at 4 in the morning on Sunday. Perfect people at the perfect time at the perfect location made this a perfect trip.
