Kande Ela reservoir is located at a height of over 1900m above sea level, This reservoir was built in 1947-49 by Hon D.S. Senanayake and was opened in 1950 with a capacity of 2.17 million cubic meters coveting 4.5 square kilometers at full capacity. Water of this reservoir is used primarily for supply drinking water to the area. Therefore you will not find a single boat with a engine in this water body. Only power source allowed is human muscle power.
Forested area developed for education purposes by the Department of Forest Conservation. Kande Ela forest reserve is situated in a calm & beautiful environment, which contains an array of various forest fauna and flora. Contains a high quality of plants and it is unique to the up country forest reservations.
Kande ela circuit bungalow is nestled between green hills and a forest reserve, Kande ela lake offers canoe rides and mesmerizing views. And it is situated on a location bordering the Kande Ela reservoir which is about 12 Km away from Nuwara Eliya town on the Nuwara Eliya – Pattipola Road.
This artificial reservoir encircled by dark green foliage occasionally speckled with colored patches of flowers stretches for 3 km. This area is not many tourists visit the area, so you will be able to take in the serene atmosphere and make some memorable photos without having big crowds.
Kande Ela Lake is a tranquil lake surrounded by hills from one side and the Hakgala Strict Nature Reserve from the other side on the route to Pattipola from Nuwara Eliya.The lake also known as Meepilimana Reservoir is situated about 12km or 30 minute drive from Nuwara Eliya on the route to Horton Plains is an ideal place to spend few hours on a trip to Nuwara Eliya.
